How to apply for the SEG (Smart Export Guarantee) tariff
Applying for the SEG tariff can be a confusing and lengthy process, here’s what to expect.
Step 1: Choose an SEG Tariff Provider
Different energy suppliers offer different SEG tariffs, so it’s important to shop around. Your SEG tariff provider may also be your current energy provider.

Step 2: Ensure You Have a Smart Meter
Most SEG schemes require that you have a smart meter installed, which measures both the energy you use and the energy you export to the grid. If you don’t have one, contact your energy supplier to arrange an installation.
Step 3: Gather Required Documentation (these will be in your handover pack)
- Your MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) certificate.
- DNO (Distribution Network Operator) approval (also known as G98 approval)
- Details of your smart meter including export reading.
Step 4: Apply to Your Chosen Supplier
Once you have chosen an energy supplier and confirmed that you’re eligible for the SEG tariff, you can begin the application process. Visit your chosen supplier’s website and find their SEG application page. Fill out the form with the necessary details about your renewable energy system, meter readings, and relevant documentation.
Your energy supplier will contact the DNO who will create an export MPAN (Meter Point Administration Number. It’s a unique 13-digit reference number assigned to each electricity supply point in the UK).
